• Hey, there! I'm Melissa McCrotty......a wedding and senior portrait photographer based in Russellville, Arkansas. I'm also a wife to Wes, and mommy to our two little gals, all three of whom you will probably see on this blog, if you hang around long enough!

This blog follows my most recent shoots, as well as bits and pieces of my life and other random-ness! Thank you so much for stopping by! Now, pull up a chair and hang out for a bit......

Cale: 1 year pictures (and a few of his cousins…..)

It’s hard to believe that Cale is already celebrating his first birthday! One of the bad things about being a photographer is having to miss fun stuff, like Cale’s birthday party, because of a wedding tommorrow. One of the good things about being a photographer…..your sister finds it easy to forgive you when you offer to take a few one year pictures:)Just kidding, Lori would have forgiven me anyway! Here are a few shots we got in downtown after our monthly family breakfast at Stoby’s…..

Probably my favorite….

Don’t kill me, Lor, just thought this was funny…

Kenzie’s motto is….you can take my picture, IF you can catch me!

After downtown, we had to run out to my parent’s house for a bit, and I took a few more of the girls playing there. Yesterday, we had a very exciting event happen, we had ACTUAL family pictures taken by a professional photographer! Jamie Fender out of Little Rock was kind enough to meet up with us, and put up with us…and I can’t wait to see what kind of great pictures she got. But, it kind of served as a reminder, because lately, I have been so busy with portraits and weddings, I have slacked off taking pictures of the girls. And, there really is no one else I had rather shoot! So, a few more, to tide me over, until I get to see Jamie’s!

They fight a LOT, but when they aren’t fighting, they really are becoming good friends. It’s so fun to see their little relationship starting to bloom!

Russellville Senior Photography: Matt

It’s funny how things change when you have kids. We used to be so excited about New Year’s Eve, and usually had some sort of plans. OK, maybe they weren’t “exciting” plans, but something…. Now, with little ones who need to be in bed by nine, we might not even stay up to watch the ball drop. And, I don’t really even care that much. Guess it’s just being so old and all! We had a fun night with the girls, though, and I got the idea to make “Family Goals for 2010″ which Wes rolled his eyes about, but Abree really got into. A few we had were: potty training for Kenzie, taking a trip to the zoo, and for Abree…. learning to swim without a life preserver– on our list of family goals. Abree also wanted to put visiting the moon like the Space Buddies did, but I talked her out of that one:)

One of my goals right now is to be totally caught up with my 2009 sessions….so tonight, I will wrap up the year with Matt’s senior pictures! Matt and his mom met up with me earlier this week on a frigid day. Matt’s mom was so sweet, and came bearing hot chocolate! Matt is special to Wes, because he has been giving Matt pitching lessons for years now (Matt’s a left-handed pitcher, like Wes) and he thinks so much of Matt and his family. Hopefully, that broken wrist will heal up in time for baseball season this year….we’re rooting for you, Matt!

Here are a few of my favs from Matt’s session….

Happy New Year! Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!

2009 Engagement Favorites

I lurrrve engagement sessions. LOVE them, love them…did I mention I love them??? All of my wedding packages include engagement sessions. I have said this before, but the engagement session is such a great time for me to get to know you as a couple, and it really helps me see how you are with each other, as well as how you are in front of the camera. I love engagement sessions. Here are some of my favorites from 2009′s engagement sessions….

Sadly, Cassie and Pierce had to change their wedding date, and I was unable to shoot their wedding this summer….but I still love their engagements!

Tiffany and Adam’s wedding is up this weekend…..seems like ages ago we took these engagements! Can’t wait to see them again!

This one makes me long for spring…

Can’t wait to meet all the amazing 2010 couple’s I have lined up!

Zach and Leslie: Day After Session

This is something I have wanted to do for a l-o-n-g time. A Day After Session. For me, this is the ultimate session. The absolute best type of session EVER. All the fun of the wedding day, minus the ………stress, time contraints, less than perfect lighting conditions, location constraints, tearful relatives or drunk ushers (it happens)! Zach and Leslie have been married for close to two years. Like so many people, they did a lot of traditional shots at their wedding. Leslie had this amazing veil, it was a shame not to show it off a little! So, we got together yesterday to enjoy the sunshine, albeit cold sunshine, for what is usually called a Day After Session.
Day After sessions (we could call them “year after” sessions!) take place at some point after the wedding. Kind of like the bridal session…….with the groom. And, what an awesome accessory the groom makes! Day After sessions are awesome because of the incredible freedom you have. Weddings, traditionally, are busy days. Even best case scenario, the most time we ever have for portraits is 45 minutes, usually less. And, then location. Typically, we are limited to locations immediately surrounding the church or venue, which may or may not be ideal. We always make it work, but to be able to pick any location, at the best light of the day…..pure bliss!

Leslie and Zach were amazing to work with…and really, really ridiculously good looking (channeling my inner Zoolander) Seriously, though, they are two of the nicest people you will ever meet, and were such troopers, despite the cold. It was truly an honor to shoot them. Narrowing down a few favorites was not easy, and truly, to see all of my favorites, you need to watch the slideshow at the end:)

A HUGE thank you to Joe at Cathy’s Flowers, for ROCKING out the bouquet and bout!!! Perfection, as usual.

Leslie’s veil was a thing of beauty….

Thanks so much, Leslie and Zach!

Photography 101 Session: Patti

Patti was in Russellville visiting family for the holidays, and she convinced her husband to watch their 15-month-old long enough for us to get in a 101 session.:)A photography 101 session is where I met up with another photographer and just answer questions and talk shop. We usually arrange an abbreviated shoot. Then, we come back to my home office and do a bit of editing and wrap things up. We really just hit the highlights of what I have learned in the past 18 months of being a wedding photographer.

I should do a little disclaimer here: I SERIOUSLY DO NOT know everything there is to know about photography. Nor do I *think* I do. FAR from it. I am still learning, every single day. And, I am pretty sure I always will be. That’s one of the things I like best about photography. You grow, you evolve, you change constantly. It’s hard to get bored when you are learning all of the time. About 18 months ago, I decided to pursue photography as a wedding photographer, and not just a hobbyist. And, I tried to find someone in this area who could help me. I really didn’t have much luck, and the majority of what I learned was from the school of trial and error. Some things I have learned are now so simple, but in the beginning seemed SO hard, just because I was forced to teach myself.

Which is why I decided to offer photography 101 sessions. They are not designed to help a “serious” photographer who is already in a well-established business. These are for people just starting out, people with questions, but no one to ask them to. People like me, who want to learn, and who learn better through hands-on and demonstration, rather than just reading information in a book or on the Internet.

Probably the major points Patti and I discussed were the advantages and disadvantages of shooting RAW versus JPEG, shooting in manual versus aperture settings, and editing in Lightroom versus Picassa. We also talked a bit about websites and facebook, as well as online hosting galleries. Patti is a kindergarten teacher, who shoots mainly portrait sessions in her spare time, all while going to school to get her master’s degree in counseling…while also being a mommy! Really don’t know how she does it all! Patti, it was great spending time with you, and I sincerely hope you came away with some things to help your business!

For our short-session, we were fortunate to work with the lovely Lacey. Here are a few of my favorites ……..

Thanks, girls!

Russellville Engagement Photography: Brandon + Kristen

They remind me of a Nicholas Sparks book. Dear John, only with a happy ending (and if you haven’t read the book, sorry to spoil it for you, but the ending is a bummer) Brandon was home for a few weeks from Iraq last May, and one week into his stay, noticed Kristen at the local Wal-Mart. They knew each other from high school, but weren’t much more than acquaintances. Familiar faces, nothing else. But, Brandon was immediately drawn to pretty Kristen, and somewhat arrogantly, informed her they were going to spend the next two weeks of his leave together. And, they did. Spent the next two weeks falling head over heels in love. Which made what followed immeasurably harder. Brandon’s leave came to an end, and they had to say goodbye when their blossoming relationship had just taking hold.

So, through the Internet, occasional phone calls, and one more visit home, these two continued to fall more deeply in love. In December, Brandon came home for good, and brought with him an engagement ring. He had been without Kristen long enough. He knew he wanted to be with her forever. So, a few days after his arrival, he proposed at the Fort Smith Riverfront.

One month from today, Kristen and Brandon will be married at the Clayton House in Fort Smith. I am thrilled that I get to be there to document their love. Yesterday, we met up for the engagement session. Here are a few of my favorites…..
